What to expect

Bolesław Prus, born Aleksander Głowacki, is one of the central figures of Polish nineteenth-century literature, author of The Doll and Pharaoh; this small museum in the spa town of Nałęczów is the only one in Poland devoted to him. It occupies the Ochronka, a wooden nursery-school building named after Adam Żeromski, built in the highlander-inspired Zakopane style by Jan Koszczyc-Witkiewicz. The building and the writer belong together: Prus gave one of his own texts to the volume whose sales paid for finishing the construction, later read through the teaching programme, and posted cards with photographs of the Ochronka to friends in Warsaw. Some of those cards are in the museum’s collection today.

The centrepiece is the writer’s study, reconstructed from photographs of his Warsaw workroom: a replica of his desk carries a nineteenth-century typewriter and a marble writing set with an inkwell, a bookcase holds striking editions of his works, including foreign-language ones, and a display case keeps original letters and photographs. Among the personal relics are an ivory letter-opener, the name plate from the door of his Warsaw flat, and the spectacles that survived against the odds.

Most of what Prus’s widow Oktawia Głowacka handed to public institutions after his death was destroyed in the Second World War, so the collection assembled here over sixty years matters all the more: family album photographs, manuscripts, correspondence and a substantial holding of illustrations, headed by Edward Okuń’s 1914 cycle of prints for Pharaoh. The library runs to over two thousand volumes, including books Prus owned, and translations into Japanese, Armenian, Finnish and Esperanto. Founded on the initiative of Professor Feliks Araszkiewicz and Stefan Butryn, it marked its sixtieth anniversary in 2021 and moved from the Małachowski Palace into the Ochronka in December 2017.

Tips

The museum opens Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00, and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is 10 zł full price and 8 zł concession, with free entry on 6, 12, 23 and 27 August 2026. A guided tour costs an extra 35 zł, a museum lesson 40 zł and a workshop 45 zł, in each case on top of the entrance tickets, and the museum does not state which languages guiding is available in, so groups should ask when booking. Only 32 people may be inside the Ochronka at any one time, which makes advance contact sensible for groups: call +48 81 501 45 52 or +48 887 750 014, or write to prus@mnwl.pl. The National Museum in Lublin also sells a combined ticket covering the castle displays and its branches (50 zł full, 40 zł concession), available only at the castle box office. Photography is permitted for private use only, without flash, extra lighting or tripods.

Getting there

The address is ul. S.A. Poniatowskiego 39, 24-140 Nałęczów. Nałęczów is a small spa town in the Lublin region, under thirty kilometres west of Lublin on the way towards Puławy and Kazimierz Dolny, and it is compact enough to cross on foot: the Ochronka stands a short walk from the centre and the spa park. The museum publishes no bus or coach details and says nothing about parking, so confirm the practicalities by phone before setting out.

The obvious companion visit is the Stefan Żeromski museum in Nałęczów, in the same town and tied to this one by its founding history. Towards the Vistula, the Czartoryski Museum in Puławy and the Vistula Museum in Kazimierz Dolny round out a straightforward day trip through the western part of the voivodeship.
