What to expect

Janów Lubelski is a small town in the far south of the Lublin region, on the edge of the Janów Forests. Its first museum was created by Tadeusz Seweryn, an ethnographer of folk art who was hiding in the town under an assumed name after the Oath Crisis of 1917. His County Museum opened in May 1919 with four sections covering statistics, natural history, rural industry and folk art, in the attic of the former district chancellery, the old post office. Cramped rooms and no money finished it off within two years.

The second attempt fixed on the town prison, built in 1825-1826, one of the few buildings in Janów on the heritage register. On 10 June 1984 a display on the town’s history from the seventeenth to the twentieth century opened there, launching a museum of armed struggle that from 1986 was a branch of the district museum in Sandomierz. The branch was wound up in 1992 and the new Regional Museum was folded into the Janów Cultural Centre; only on 30 December 1996 did it become independent, with departments of history and art, ethnography and archaeology. Since 2019 its offices have been back in the attic of the old post office, where Seweryn started a century earlier.

A visit today is a modest affair. The prison building still awaits restoration, and the single refurbished display room is the former prison chapel, brought back into use in 2012. The programme carries the institution instead: temporary exhibitions, among them a 2026 open-air display about the partisan commander Hieronim Dekutowski, code name Zapora, prepared by the Lublin branch of the Institute of National Remembrance; Museum Thursdays; patronage of local pottery and basketry; the national potters’ meetings held at Łążek Garncarski since 2006; and a twice-yearly regional journal, Janowskie Korzenie.

Tips

The museum keeps office hours, Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 15:30, and is closed at weekends. It publishes no admission price list, so telephone ahead to confirm what is open and where: the office is at ul. Jana Zamoyskiego 52, while the exhibition room has its own address at ul. Ogrodowa 3a. Prices for educational sessions are published: workshops cost 15 PLN per person and run 90 minutes, museum lessons cost 5 PLN per person and run 45 minutes. Both take place on weekdays and are booked by telephone, ideally a week ahead. The subjects are firmly local, from Łążek pottery and the prehistory of the Janów district to Polish folk customs such as Easter palms and decorated eggs. Neither building has a lift or Braille signage, and there is no sign language interpreter or induction loop, though assistance dogs are welcome in both.

Getting there

Janów Lubelski sits roughly 70 kilometres south of Lublin on the road towards Stalowa Wola and Rzeszów, so a car or a regional coach is the usual way in. The museum office at ul. Jana Zamoyskiego 52 is in the town centre and has two entrances, a paved path at the front and steps at the back, with a marked disabled parking bay behind the building. The exhibition room in the former prison, at ul. Ogrodowa 3a, has a single street entrance, an accessible toilet and a disabled parking bay in front. The museum lists no public transport routes on its own website.

Nearby museums

The Janów district borders the Biłgoraj country, which makes the Biłgoraj regional museum the obvious companion visit. To the north, beyond the Janów Forests, the Kraśnik regional museum covers the 24th Uhlan Regiment, while a trip east into the Roztocze hills can end at Guciów farmstead, where ethnography meets natural history.
