What to expect

Janowiec is a small village on the left bank of the Vistula in eastern Poland, roughly 130 km south-east of Warsaw and directly opposite the artists’ town of Kazimierz Dolny. Its castle sits on a bluff above the river and is one of the most photogenic ruins in the Lublin region. Mikolaj Firlej, castellan of Krakow and grand crown hetman, began it early in the sixteenth century as a bastion fortress cut off from the plateau by a deep moat. His son Piotr turned it into a residence with Renaissance apartments as early as 1526, and between 1577 and 1587 Andrzej Firlej brought the Italian architect and sculptor Santi Gucci Fiorentino from Italy to add a palace wing crowned with a parapet and decorated on its southern face with diamond sgraffito.

In the seventeenth century the Tarlo family gave the residence its early Baroque character, and the Lubomirskis, who took it over in 1654, rebuilt it after the fire set by the troops of Charles X Gustav of Sweden. Under Antoni Benedykt Lubomirski the castle reached its peak, with Rococo window surrounds along the great southern enfilade. The last owner, Mikolaj Piaskowski, died here in 1803, and through the nineteenth century the empty building slowly collapsed. Leon Kozlowski bought the castle and its park in 1931, could not afford the restoration, and sold the estate to the Polish State in 1975. It was then stabilised as a permanent ruin and partly reconstructed for museum use. For half a century it belonged to the museum in Kazimierz Dolny; since 2025 it has run as an independent cultural institution under its own management.

The main draw is the set of tiered cloisters looking out over the courtyard and the whole Vistula valley. The surrounding park of about three hectares holds an open-air museum of wooden manor and farm architecture from the Lublin region: a Baroque larchwood manor house from Moniaki dating to the second half of the eighteenth century, a granary from Podlodow, a storehouse with a coach house from Kurow and a barn from Wylagi. The granary shows the exhibition Life Between Two Banks, with boats once used for transport and fishing on the Vistula. The park itself lies within the Kazimierz Landscape Park and the Natura 2000 network, and on a clear day the Swietokrzyskie Mountains are visible some 80 km to the south-west.

Tips

In the summer season, 25 April to 30 September, the museum opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00, while the courtyard and cloisters stay open until 20:00. From 1 October to 24 April the hours are 9:00 to 16:00, again seven days a week. Tickets are sold until half an hour before closing. Because of restoration work in the courtyard, prices have been reduced since 22 May 2026: 18 zl standard, 15 zl concession, 50 zl family, and 15 zl for the courtyard and cloisters alone.

Check the museum’s announcements before travelling: new permanent exhibitions are being installed, so the North House and the manor house from Moniaki are temporarily closed to visitors. Guided tours are offered to organised groups, both school and adult, and must be booked in advance Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 16:00. The castle is not wheelchair accessible: the gateway is reached by a wooden bridge and a cobbled ramp, and neither the cloisters nor the Gate Gallery can be visited in a wheelchair. An accessible toilet is located in the guardhouse by the car park, and assistance dogs are welcome in every part of the site that is open to visitors. The museum also rents guest rooms: chambers inside the castle in the summer season only, rooms in the manor house all year round.

Getting there

The address is ul. Lubelska 20, 24-123 Janowiec. The castle is impossible to miss, standing on the escarpment on the left bank of the Vistula opposite Kazimierz Dolny. There is a car park on the museum grounds, without marked disabled bays; guests staying overnight park free of charge. The museum lists no public transport connections, so the practical options are to drive in from Pulawy or to take the river crossing from Kazimierz Dolny.

Nearby museums

The obvious companion visit is the museum in Kazimierz Dolny across the river, which looked after Janowiec Castle for fifty years. Some fifteen kilometres north lies the Czartoryski Museum in Pulawy, with the Temple of the Sibyl and the Gothic House, and a little further east the Stefan Zeromski museum in Naleczow. Together they make a comfortable one-day route through the Vistula gorge.
