What to expect

Zamość, in the far south-east of Poland about 90 km from Lublin, is a Renaissance town founded by Chancellor Jan Zamoyski and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The museum sits at the heart of it, in a row of 17th-century merchant houses along the northern frontage of the Great Market Square. These were the Armenian houses: Armenian merchants settled in Zamość from 1585 under a privilege granted by Zamoyski, and their carved facades are among the most photographed in the country. The collection moved into number 26 in 1942, survived the German occupation there, and the houses were restored between 1978 and 1989. Galleries run across the ground floor and two upper storeys, with steps between rooms.

Four permanent displays divide the story of the region. Zamość, the Zamoyski Family and the Zamoyski Entail traces the town and the dynasty that founded it. The Zamość Region in Prehistory and the Early Middle Ages covers the archaeology of the land before the town existed. Folk Art of the Zamość Region draws on the ethnography department, and the Gallery of Historical and Sacred Painting holds the museum’s fine art. The museum is entered in the Polish State Register of Museums under number 114 and publishes part of its collection on Google Arts and Culture.

2026 is the centenary year: the museum has been running since 1926, founded on the initiative of Zygmunt Klukowski, a doctor and community activist from nearby Szczebrzeszyn. The anniversary exhibition Written into Time. 100 Years of the Zamość Museum opened on 20 June 2026. Beyond the main building it also runs the Arsenał museum of fortifications and weaponry at ul. Zamkowa 2, the Marian Konieczny Sculpture Gallery at ul. Łukasińskiego 2B and a display on the Zamojski Academy at ul. Akademicka 8.

Tips

The museum opens daily except Mondays, 10:00 to 16:00, and until 17:00 from May to the end of September. The ticket desk stops selling half an hour before the galleries close, and tickets are bought there rather than online. Full price is 23 PLN, reduced 15 PLN and group 12 PLN; the ticket also covers the Marian Konieczny Sculpture Gallery and stays valid for two days from purchase, so a long visit can be split over two days. The Zamojski Academy display is priced separately at 10 PLN and 6 PLN.

The free-entry day for the permanent displays is set month by month and announced on the website; in August 2026 it is Thursday. A guided tour in Polish costs 70 PLN and must be booked on 883 375 564; the site lists no tours in English. There is no lift in the historic houses, and wheelchair users can reach only the corridor and some ground-floor rooms, where the accessible toilet is located.

Getting there

The address is ul. Ormiańska 30, 22-400 Zamość, on the Great Market Square opposite the town hall, in the middle of the walled Old Town. The gallery entrance is on ul. Ormiańska; the offices are entered from ul. Pereca. The museum has no car park of its own, so drivers use the paid car parks ringing the Old Town and walk in, which is the sensible way to move around the Renaissance grid anyway. The car park serving the Sculpture Gallery is entered from ul. Peowiaków.

The regional museum in Tomaszów Lubelski and the Museum of the Biłgoraj Land both spent years as branches of the same institution as Zamość, so their collections tell one shared story. For an open-air counterpoint, the Guciów farmstead museum in the Roztocze hills lies half an hour south-west.
