What to expect

Guciów is a village in the Roztocze hills of south-eastern Poland, and the farmstead here grew out of the ambition of two geographers, Anna and Stanisław Jachymek. It remains entirely private: the owners state plainly that they have never received support from the state, the local authority, the heritage conservator or the European Union. The buildings, dated to the 17th and 19th centuries, are entered in the national register of monuments, and in 2025 the Minister of Culture awarded the farmstead a gold badge for rescuing the monuments of the Zamość region. The Ethnographic-Natural History Museum occupies several timber structures in the valley of the river Wieprz and is built around four collections: meteorites, fossils, archaeology and ethnography.

The meteorite hall is the reason many people come. It is one of only three meteorite displays open to the public in Poland, and its centrepiece is the Zakłodzie meteorite, found on the Roztocze in 1998 by Stanisław Jachymek: a rust-crusted stone weighing 8.68 kg, provisionally classified as a primitive enstatite achondrite. More than fifty further meteorites stand beside it, and the permanent exhibition Falling Stars, opened in April 2013 in a wooden store house of 1762, adds material from Mars, the Moon and the Chelyabinsk fall. The fossil collection of south-eastern Poland holds the country’s largest ammonite, over a metre across, seven thousand belemnites, petrified wood and hadrosaur tracks found in 2005 at Potok, five kilometres away.

The archaeological and ethnographic rooms stay closer to the ground. The farmstead sits on what the museum calls the best preserved early medieval complex in Poland, with a hillfort, open settlements and burial mounds. An 18th-century cottage holds a reconstructed peasant living room, a 19th-century barn a collection of farm implements, and a granary of 1764 a gallery of local craft. An inn and guest rooms operate alongside the museum as a separate side of the business. National Geographic named the place one of the seven wonders of Poland in 2017.

Tips

The farmstead opens Wednesday to Friday 10:00-18:00, Saturday 9:00-19:00 and Sunday 10:00-18:00, and closes on Monday and Tuesday. Since 1 January 2023 the owners have wound up their commercial activity, and entry to the thatched structures themselves, the cottage, the barn, the stable and the cabinet shrine, is free of charge, with the fees collected going towards their repair. A guided tour of the museum costs 39 PLN full price and 30 PLN reduced for students and pensioners, 25 PLN for large families, falling to 26 PLN in groups of twenty or more and 21 PLN for primary schools; this tariff has applied since 22 June 2026.

Groups can add a flatbread baking demonstration with tasting, hand-churned butter making, pottery or weaving workshops, or a campfire. Leave time for the two marked trails: the route up to the early medieval hillfort on Monastyrz hill takes about two hours, the trail along the meanders of the Wieprz about an hour and a half. There is no online ticketing, so group visits are arranged by telephone.

Getting there

The museum is at Guciów 19, 22-470 Zwierzyniec, in the Wieprz valley on the edge of Roztocze National Park, a few kilometres from the small town of Zwierzyniec. Roads approach from Zwierzyniec or from Zamość, the nearest larger city; parking and toilets are on site and the owners count them as part of what the ticket buys. The museum’s own site names no bus or rail service, so visitors arrive by car or coach.
